     I was really excited to receive this Bible.  It's a totally new look into the New Testament.  The Voice "calls the reader to step into the whole story of Scripture and experience the joy and wonder of God's revelation. Created for and by a church in great transition, The Voice uniquely represents collaboration among scholars, pastors, writers, musicians, poets, and other artists, giving great attention to the beauty of the narrative." Some of it's features include: Hundreds of engaging notes throughout, with a topical index for easy use.  Also, four different reading programs to help you step into the story.  In addition, a new look with speaker identification and helpful resources throughout the text.  This Bible is set up quiet like a story, with a fantastic narrative.
    I completely expected not to like this Bible just because it breaks tradition.  Happy to say though, I love, love, love it!  Each book opens with a set up for that book - who wrote it, where they were, what they were doing at the time, and a little history of the book.  It's not written at all like a loquacious scholar.  It's perfect for our day to day home school Bible lesson.  Kids will completely get swept away with this Bible.  It's perfect for daily family devotions; or even to just pick up like a book.  My favorite bit, is that each account has a written setting.  This Bible absolutely comes alive in your minds-eye.  No, I wouldn't use this Bible for serious study or for perfected translation and exegesis (see a good NASB keyword Bible for that).  Nonetheless, this is a great family Bible.  Also it would be a substantial Bible for a new Christian or a beginner at Bible reading.  Take a peek at it, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.  Plus, it's only $6.99 - so it's perfect for a Christmas or birthday gift.

Heaven Is For Real For Kids Book Review

Book Review of Heaven Is For Real For Kids as told by Colton Burpo
"A Little Boys Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back."

     I chose this book mainly for Lauryl, since I had heard such positive reviews about the prequel novel to this children's edition.  This book is in the words of four year old Colton Burpo.  At the time, Colton was in the hospital, when Jesus came and took him briefly to Heaven.  His account of Heaven fairly lines up with Scripture and is acceptably convincing that he was actually there.  Renowned artist Wilson Ong illustrated this beautiful book.  I was very impressed with the colors, and talent in which each page is divinely painted.  This book is sure to draw in and keep the attention of little ones.  I would recommend this book to children 0-12 years old. Each page is simply written in Colton's words and along with just as much Scripture.  There is also a Salvation Prayer on the last page, and then additional information on the inside back cover that you won't want to miss.  Moreover, there is a little part entitled Questions Kids Ask About Heaven Is For Real.  
    Lauryl's point of view: "I thought this book was very good.  I loved the colors used in the pictures.  I like the part of the story when Colton talks about looking up at God.  He also describes the gates of Heaven really well.  There is nothing I didn't like about this book.  I would recommend this book to all kids aged 5 and up.  It's a great bedtime story book.  I definitely want to read it again."

Muscular Faith Book Review

Book Review of Muscular Faith by Ben Patterson
"How to strengthen your heart, soul and mind for the only challenge that matters"

     Ben Patterson isn't new to the faith or to writing.  Thankfully.  This book is a challenge, in which Patterson makes the "case for pursuing, vigorous, gritty faith" instead of the self-absorbed, lax ways of man.  Patterson implores the reader to stake their entire being and existence on God - our only assurance in our storm tossed lives.  This book contains four parts - the call to faith, the case for faith, the obstacles, and the essentials.  Tyndale even offers online discussion questions if you choose this to be your spotlight book for a book club, Sunday school or Bible study group. 
   This book contains a great quantity of information - some useful, some above what's needed.  Patterson, although, hits the nail on the head with his genuine insight like, "Left undisciplined and uninstructed, disappointment with God will corrode the soul."  Or, "No matter how detestable or present circumstances are, they are not the final word.  They will pass away, but our hope, our eternal destiny, is unshakeable."  Patterson tosses in these outstanding morsels all throughout this book.   Though a tad on the lengthy side, this book is a truly hidden treasure. 
    I Timothy 6:12 - "Run for your life from all this. Pursue a righteous life—a life of wonder, faith, love, steadiness, courtesy. Run hard and fast in the faith. Seize the eternal life, the life you were called to, the life you so fervently embraced in the presence of so many witnesses."

The Love & Respect Experience Book Review

Book Review of The Love & Respect Experience by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs
"A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love"

     The Love and Respect Experience is a companion for Eggerichs' original book entitled Love and Respect.   Although, I was delighted to know that these books can be used alone.  This book is a tool to help delve deeper into your marital relationship.  It uses the accurate principles from the original book, and helps you apply them to your own life through a weekly devotional.  The book is set up with 52 devotions, one for each week of the year.  Each one is a few pages of insightful reading, coupled with a petition to pray and a call to action.  If you want to go even further, you can bring in Appendix A-D, for tools like discussion questions and further understanding on why couples devotions are invaluable.  Eggerichs also spells out different ways couples can approach this book, which makes it possible for any couple, no matter the schedule, to fit it in weekly. Husbands really love this book, because it's weekly, not a daily commitment.  The books offers something they can "do" all week in action (since they are doers by nature).  Women love it, because they are still getting that intimate time with their spouses.  After all...we are simple creatures. 
    Eggerichs hit a home run with this publication.  It's really the whole package for any married couple - whether you are going through a season of abundance or drought.  His principles are truly timeless and boil down to...respecting your husband makes him love you deeper....deeply loving your wife makes her respect you.  It truly is a cycle in which we'd all like to be on.  This book stays true to life and it's circumstances.  I'm excited to continue this devotional, at my husband's side.

One Call Away Book Review

Book Review of One Call Away by Brenda Warner
"A Memoir: Answering Life's Challenges with Unshakable Faith"

     Brenda Warner's life is anything but normal.  She's dealt with more things in one life, than six lives together - handicapped child, divorce, death, fame, poverty, wealth.  Her life is anything but simple, as she pens in her memoir.  This was the second book written by Warner.  The first was a compilation piece presented with her husband, First Things First.  Brenda Warner is a speaker, philanthropist and a New York Times best-selling author.  I first noticed her at this years Women of Faith conference, as she was a new speaker in the line-up.  Her condensed version of her life story was enough to interest me into reading her book.
     My first thoughts: Wow! I'm so glad my life is simple.  Warner's life seems waged in personal war and conflict.  She goes from a Marine, to a divorced pauper Mom, to the wife of NFL champ Kurt Warner.  In between, her life is riddled with unimaginable obstacles.  Now here is my opinion..... Warner is not, I repeat, is not a great writer.  The book doesn't offer brilliant insight or perfected linguistics.  It's a raw account of a tough life lived.  Each tragedy faced, Warner remains solid in her faith of God's ultimate and much bigger plan.  Even in her now immense fame and fortune, I am happy to see that she and her family are giving back.  As a Mom of seven children, she seems to be on the right track of keeping her brood grounded and love-minded.  Bottom line....this is a easy-read.  It's an interesting story and keeps you occupied.  It reminds you to keep the faith during struggle and turmoil.

Celebrating The Sabbath

This year as we study Creation to The Greeks, we are incorporating Biblical Feasts into the curriculum,  through cooking classes that Lauryl is taking with my mom.  Our first, the Sabbath.  Mom and Lauryl did an exceptional job at cooking, organizing, planning and putting great effort into making the meal a traditional Jewish experience.  Here is some of what we did and ate....

 All of the women dressed in shawls. 

 We lit two white candles representing Christ as the Light of the world, and for a light to push out anything that's dark.

Dad said a blessing over Lauryl and I.

Dad was a good sport, reading his parts in the blessings and wearing his home made yamaka.

Mom led us through each part of the feast - wonderful!

We each drank the wine - representing Jesus' shed blood for us. 

We each washed our hands at the table, readying ourselves (cleansing) for the breaking of bread.

Mom and Lauryl made this cloth to cover the Challah.

Lauryl made two Challah loaves, representing the Jews reliance on manna in the wilderness.  On the sixth day they were to make/take two portions - one for that day, and one for the Sabbath.  She made one as a traditional six braid, and one with three.

Tea was served.

 Lauryl made, and Mom served traditional Golden Yoich.  (almost like chicken noodle soup)

Our family was so blessed tonight as we partook in this wonderful and ancient celebration.  I'm really looking forward to the second part of the Sabbath meal tomorrow night.  It's very thought provoking when we take into consideration that the Jewish people do this each and every week.  I'm amazed at their thankfulness!

Woman of Faith Dallas (Wrap Up)

We are freshly home from this year's Women of Faith Dallas.  Thanks to Booksneeze.com for my tickets - I won them!  I took Lauryl and we were truly blessed by all of the speakers and music artists.  I continue to feel a true honor standing among 30,000+ women, and being free to worship together.   Mandissa and Amy Grant were incredible, as always.  Although, the fact that Amy Grant is now 50, made me feel quite old.  Wasn't I just 14 be-bopping to Baby, Baby in the bathroom mirror?  Mandissa has more exuberance and love that anyone I've ever witnessed.  Completely blessed by her talent and outpouring.  That girl has something special.  It was fantastic to see Andy Andrews - and hear more of his stories.  You can read my review of his latest book here.  The other speakers were encouraging, and of course very funny.  I think I was touched the most by Micro - the new project for World Vision.  As an entrepreneur; and having a business that is abundant, how can I not get involved here.  Watch this clip, and please, if you feel amazed like me, join up now!
